By emphasising history within living memory we create opportunities for Newcastle residents to create new historical records through shared memories, personal histories and family photographs. Since 1999, we have collected personal histories from those that lived or worked in the Lower Ouseburn Valley, an area once noted for its concentration of heavy industry and working class housing. In 2005 we extended this activity to include Benwell, Scotswood, Elswick and Fenham.
Much of this work has been published in a series of illustrated magazines. Generally 16-20 pages in length, these publications provide a venue for people to share their first-hand knowledge of their local history and heritage, whilst providing informative essays for others to enjoy and study. Each issue is illustrated throughout with archive images.
