Celebrating local heritage

Walks

In 2006 volunteers managing the West Newcastle Picture History Collection which is based at Benwell Library, were keen to produce a local history self guided walk in the area. We used old photographs from the collection to illustrate the route and to give reference points where walkers could compare old and new.

The resources are available from Benwell library but you can also download them here:  Benwell Local History walk

Westerhope Walkabout

Following on from the success of the Westerhope Wheel Project, the members of the Westerhope Community Partnership were keen to celebrate their heritage further.  We worked with them to produce Westerhope Walkabout - a local area heritage guide which takes you along Stamfordham Road and introduces you to the interesting history behind "the hope of the West".

The printed guide is available from the Westerhope Community Association on Hill Head Road.  You can download a pdf here:

Gosforth High Street North & South

Trinity Church on Gosforth High Street established a local history group to promote greater awareness of the heritage of the local area and the High Street in particular.  It soon became apparant that Gosforth High Street, with its historic role as the Great North Road, had many surviving buildings and features that could be included in a local walking guide.  Consequently, it was decided to publish two guides for Gosforth, one for the north end of the High Street, and one for the south end.  Pdfs of both guides are available to download:

Around & About Lemington

The centenary of Lemington Riverside School in 2009 raised local awareness of the rich heritage of Lemington village, with its links to the coal and glass trades, the Tyne riverside, and its churches and pubs.  A group of residents joined together to research and identify features of historic interest and these have now been published as a short walking guide.   Download a pdf of this guide here:
